If you don't know what I'm talking about, go
here first to get caught up.
I was doing some more brainstorming today, coming up with some ideas, which I'll categorize into "Writing" and "Art":
WRITING (ARTICLE IDEAS):
• Weapon care
• Avoiding the law
• Basic hunter's kit
• List or reviews of safehouses for hunters (places like Harvelle's Roadhouse, where hunters are welcome and safe to be open about what they do)
• "The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly" - Encyclopedia of creatures
• Crash course in Latin (For All Your Exorcism Needs)
• Obituaries for hunters who've been killed recently
• Fact vs Folklore
• Creature sightings
• Map tracking demonic omens
• Profiles / Bios of famous hunters (Original Characters, not recognizable characters from the show)
• Ghosts vs Poltergeists, how to tell the difference and how to get rid of them
• History of Exorcism
• Crime Scenes: Spotting the Paranormal
• Holy Water How To's
• Interviews with hunters (original characters)
• Cultural highlight - a feature on a different culture's folklore each issue
• Letters to the editor (from hunters)
• Most Wanted: Demons known to be at large and last known whereabouts
• How to Recognize a Succubus
• Tips for Beginners
ART / GRAPHICS IDEAS:
• Original drawings to look like cave art or medieval tapestries/paintings, as examples of proof of hunting through the ages
• "Photographs" of creatures - could be manips or drawings
• Postcards from the road
• Important symbols and how to draw them
• Newspaper clippings - manips to look like newspaper articles, as examples of leads for cases
• Missing persons ads for hunters who've gone missing
• Hunting related ads - rock salt, weaponry, rosaries, etc.
The point I need to emphasize here is that the focus is on ORIGINAL work inspired by the show, not drawings of Dean and Sam or an editorial written by Ellen. In order to make this something we can potentially present as a gift to Kripke (and possibly even Jared and Jensen), we need to avoid using recognizable characters from the show (no Dean, Sam, Bobby, Ellen, etc.) unless they appear in myth (Lilith, for example), and any art must be original. Manips would be fine, but no images from the show so there's no copyright infringement. There could be vague mentions of canon, perhaps, like maybe Lilith could be on the Most Wanted list, let's say, but nothing that's focusing on the SHOW so much as the supernatural in general.
I feel like this would be a really fun project for fandom to help get us through long hiatuses, and it would be a nice tribute to Kripke and his amazing brain, I think. I think he'd get a kick out of it, provided that we're not ripping off the show and using their characters and plotlines, etc.
I really want to do this and there was a lot of positive response in my previous post, so I think here is what I would need:
• Editors
• Cover artist(s)
• Layout artist(s)
• Writers
• Artists
• And I'd need some sort of admin people to help me go through submissions and get things done on time. That could fall under editor or it could be a whole separate person or persons.
I'm thinking this could be quarterly, but depending on how long it actually takes (seeing as how I've never done this kind of thing before) to put one issue together, it may be twice a year, or maybe instead of doing a periodical, we could do one big issue. I'd love a periodical though, and quarterly is my initial goal, but we'll see how it comes together.
There would likely be some kind of contest to come up with a name, seeing as how I can't think of anything clever to call it. What would a good prize be? I think everyone has a copy of the Paley panel by now, otherwise I could offer a copy of that made from my original (that came with my purchased copy of the dvds, NOT a burned copy from a digital file). I could offer one of the SPN companion books perhaps, either one of the novels or the monsters book or one of the official season companions. What would a good prize be? Any ideas?
Also, I have no idea how to go about actually STARTING this process. LOL. I'm good at brainstorming, but actually knowing the process is something else. I'm going to put a tentative release date of the first issue as October 1st. Is there anyone who is good at overseeing and managing things that could help me come up with a process for getting ready to take submissions for the first issue? Also, I don't know what the criteria should be for what goes in and what doesn't, or how we would choose. Perhaps a planning committee is in order. I've had a few offers from people on my flist for that kind of thing, but is there anyone who has actually worked on a project like this who knows about what has to get done who could help get this thing started?
